Lost Your Life Insurance Policy? Here Is How to Get a Duplicate in Nepal

A life insurance policy is more than just a piece of paper; it is a vital legal contract. For both the insured and the beneficiary, maintaining the physical policy document is essential until the term is completed. It serves as the primary basis for claiming benefits, determining coverage details, and resolving any potential disputes with the insurer.

Despite its importance, documents can be lost, torn, or destroyed due to unforeseen circumstances. Since insurance companies generally will not process a claim without the original document, it is in the best interest of the insured or legal heir to apply for a duplicate immediately.

While the process of obtaining a copy is somewhat rigorous, following these official procedures will ensure you regain your coverage records.

If you have confirmed that your policy is missing, you can navigate the replacement process by completing the following steps:

1. Initial Notification

First, inform the nearest branch office of your life insurance company about the loss. This can be done either verbally or through a formal written letter to alert them of the situation.

2. Formal Application

You must fill out an official application form provided by the insurer for a duplicate policy. If a form is not available, a formal handwritten application should be registered with the office. Ensure you include:

  • The Policy Number
  • Full name of the insured
  • Updated contact details (Mobile number and Email address)

3. Public Notice Publication

Once the application is registered, you are required to publish a 35-day notice in a national daily newspaper.

  • The insurer will provide a specific sample for this notice.
  • The notice must disclose the policy number, the name of the insured, and the approximate date and location where the document was lost.
  • Note: The cost of publishing this notice is the responsibility of the insured.

4. Verification and Waiting Period

After the notice appears in the newspaper, take one original copy of the published notice to the insurer’s office for their records. Keep a second copy safely for yourself. You must then wait for the 35-day period to lapse to ensure no third party comes forward with a claim against the lost document.

5. Issuance and Fees

After the 35-day window closes, the insurance company will finalize the internal verification and prepare the duplicate policy. You will be required to visit the office on a specified date to collect the document.

  • A copying fee must be paid to the insurer. This fee is generally fixed at Rs. 500.

Final Advice

Once you receive your new copy, it is highly recommended to store it in a secure, fireproof location or a bank locker. Additionally, keeping a digital scan or a photocopy in a separate location can help expedite the process should you ever face a similar situation in the future.
